“I enjoy building the students’ foundation for the middle grades. In fourth grade we’re thinking to learn and learning to think. ”
A GLANCE AT THE CURRICULUM...
MATH
In grade four we have a lot to discover in math class! We continue the study of base 10 number facts that was started in third grade. We look at both whole numbers and fractions. While studying geometry and measurement, we create kites and determine their area and perimeter. One of our favorite activities is singing our Number Drills.
ENGLISH LANGAUGE ARTS
Writing skills are constantly being developed in all subject areas, with a focus on essay writing. Students eventually move on to writing five-paragraph essays and “mini” research papers. Different fiction and nonfiction texts are read based on our current theme. In addition, a book report is completed for each of the year’s six themes.
SCIENCE
During our study of life science, students review plants and animals. They also discuss how our earth changes in earth science, and they uncover new concepts relating to matter, energy, and electricity in physical science. Lab skills and the scientific method are reinforced during our trips to the new STEM Lab.
SOCIAL STUDIES
New York, New York! It’s all about the history of New York in grade 4. Students travel through time to study the earliest New Yorkers and eventually make their way to our current society. An important part of our work is an awareness of social issues through history, especially New York’s rich immigrant culture. To celebrate diversity, students participate in a living museum, during which each student represents his or her native land.
RELIGION
In fourth grade religion class we place an emphasis on how we live our religion. Studying the 10 Commandments, we create projects that focus on making the world a better place, and we also focus on empathy for others by donating to UNICEF, Habitat for Humanity and Heifer International.
